Winter Olympics 2014 – USA Mens Ice Hockey Team Roster Announced At Winter Classic

In the aftermath of the 2014 Winter Classic between Detroit and Toronto, the USA Olympic roster was announced, just as it was after the 2010 game.

Kids came to the ice each wearing a jersey with the name of player that was named in the squad. With the exception of the players who were at the game. Namely, Phil Kessel, James Van Riemsdyk of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Jimmy Howard from the Detroit Red Wings.
Whilst there wasn’t any real surprises of those included, it was those that missed out that showed the strength of the USA squad going to Sochi.
Bobby Ryan, Jack Johnson and Keith Yandle were all left out and would likely be the first names to be brought in should there be any injuries between now and the start of the 2014 Winter Olympics.
In fact, the biggest surprise was that Red Wings netminder Jimmy Howard was chosen at all. The Detroit man has been in patchy form at best, seemingly picked on reputation over the past few seasons than his form in this.
Ben Bishop could maybe have been a better option to back up Jonathan Quick, who will likely start most games and Ryan Miller.
It is a fine looking team that should be looking to get to the gold medal game come the end of the two weeks, anything less than that will be seen as a huge disappointment for the US.
