I know the “new” school ice skaters don’t wrap their laces around the back, JJ doesn’t even tie his boots at all. He puts them on and gets on the ice – shows how crazy that guy is.

For the old school skaters, lacing around the ankles is pretty normal, also we don’t necessarily lace it up that high where it bends the tendon guard foward. As for weakening the boot, that might be true with a boot construction of lesser quality, but by then most people will probably be looking to purchase a new skate when they feel the boot is degrading.

It doesn’t matter what hockey skates you’re using, this is the case with even the Bauer Total One Supreme (we can both agree they are not cheap) they are simply not designed to take pressure from behind the tendon support. If your laces were the correct length, you wouldn’t even be able to wrap them around the back repeatedly.

As well as restricting range of motion, it rapidly increases the speed your skates break down, not everyone will be happy to spend money on new skates prematurely.
