Ice Skating Techniques How to fall

Learning some of the better ways of falling while skating
One of the most important aspects of skating is learning how to fall, this should be seen as one of the first principles picked up during learning how to stop. There are certain ways in which you can minimize chances of an injury when falling that we will cover. If you have any pervious injuries or weaker areas of your body, take the proper precautions to prevent further/long term damage, (example) damaged or weak knees (that you have permission to skate on after having a consultation for a doctor or practicing physician) USE KNEE PADS there is nothing cool about having permanently damaged knees, only to find that when you  hit your mid thirties, you have trouble walking and running, not to mention developing rheumatism or arthritis.

When falling forward, keep your chin up and when falling backward, press your chin into your chest. Relax your body as much as possible because a stiff body is more likely to get injured than a relaxed body.

  • Avoid using your knees, elbows or wrists landing on the ice surface first, these parts of your body have tendons that can torn or sprained very simply
  • If you feel you’re about to fall, bend your knees and squat into a dipped position, this helps to reduce the impact on the ice.
  • Do not lean back as you may hit your head,
  • Try to land on your bottom or sides, depending on how your falling
  • Tuck your arms in while falling, to avoid getting run over by other skaters.
